Welcome back! It sounds like everyone had a busy, enjoyable Spring Break. I think everyone grew over the past week, they're getting so big and smart! Only 47 days left....hard to believe!
Important dates and reminders:
Thursday, March 29th – Class Picture Day - the class picture will not be included in the yearbook, so if you want one you will need to preorder. Forms were sent home the week before Spring Break.
Thursday, April 19th - Field trip to Crowe’s Nest Farm, 9:45ish-2 pm. Be on the lookout for a payment request email from Skyward. Cost is $6 per child. More info on this one coming soon!
Here's what we're up to in Room 106 this week:
story element: retelling
High frequency words: come, here (review all)
-beginning and ending blends
-Beginning “Becoming AVID Readers” unit in Reading Workshop
-writing workshop – drafting and publishing our autobiographies
-reading with our reading groups
-counting by 10s to 100
-addition and subtraction
-clear the board (addition and probability)
-place value TOP IT (if you flip over 2 and 6...what is your biggest number? 26 or 62??
* Kindergarten “homework” is reading ANYTHING for 10 minutes per day (bedtime stories read by mom and dad count). Book bags are simply great practice for reading books on our “just right” level, and reading group books give us a bit of a challenge to keep pushing us along. Confused yet? If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. ALL of our readers are making great progress! As always - no stress allowed in kindergarten! :)

January 15-19, 2018
Wow! Well, the weather this week was nothing less than exciting! I don’t know about you...but I loved every second of our *Snow Day*. I made it a day all about being mindful. I didn’t watch any television (gasp) or even turn on the radio (double gasp). I spent the day in complete silence; which is quite the opposite of most days. I worked on house projects, put away laundry, read my book, and ate yummy food! I hope you enjoyed your day!
We are working on finishing up a few activities from last week before moving on and starting new activities. We will continue working on short /u/ this week and into next week. We are working on new books. I gave everyone NEW books this week. We will be bringing them home tomorrow. They may be tricky or “just right” books. Please work on getting back into the habit of bringing them back and forth each day.
We are really getting the hang of addition and understanding the concept of joining. We are using modeling and manipulatives to demonstrate the action. We even used our bodies! 2 kids plus 3 kids equals 5 kids! :)
Stay warm and get ready for 70 degrees this weekend!

Welcome back to the second half of Kindergarten. Wait! What now?!? Kindergarten is halfway over? NOOOOOOOO! :(
Roxie and I had a relaxing and energizing break. We went on lots of hikes, snuggled on cold nights, spent time with family, and rode in around in our NEW CAR!! WOOT! Merry Christmas to me! I am the official owner of a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. I love it! :)
We jumped right back into it this morning. We settled back into our routine with our morning meeting and new jobs. We went off to library to get new books. If your child, forgot their library book, they can bring it tomorrow and get a new one.

I hope that everyone enjoyed their long weekend. I did some hiking, reading, cooking, lounging, and flower picking out at Sweet Berry Farm. It was an A+ weekend. Three day weekends are very rejuvenating for me. I hope that it was for you as well.
This week we will be working on PREDICTING as we read stories. A good reader uses clue from the text to make a good guess about what will happen next in the story. Try it as you read together at home. We will continue to talk about favorite storybooks during our Reader’s Workshop.

Wow! We are moving right along here in Room 106! Our routines are becoming a habit and the children understand both classroom and school rules. Yesterday we all earned a BOBCAT RESPECT PAW, along with Ms. Wright's class. Ms. Wright was running late due to the sad accident on 360 yesterday so her class joined us for morning meeting and for a read-aloud. They were respectful listeners and were very helpful. I must say looking out onto a sea of over 25 kids was a little daunting. LOL! I have sure gotten used to having such a small class.
Math:
*rote counting to 10
*counting 10 objects
*writing numbers to 10
*ordering numbers (0-8 or 10-18)
Language Arts:
*sight words: a, to (the, little, am)

This is just a gentle reminder that school pictures are this Thursday (9/14). Please send your order form if you are choosing to get pictures done. All children will have their picture taken for school records. I will be wearing the largest bow that comes to school that day. The bigger the better in my book!!

Week of August 28th to September 1st
Good afternoon and Welcome Back! I hope that everyone was safe and dry this weekend (family and friends included). I know a few people who couldn't get in touch with loved ones and I hope that wasn't the case with any of you. All of my little people were here and accounted for with bright smiles on their faces which made me happy after watching so many sad things on the news over the weekend.
We are rockin' and rollin' here in Room 106. We are learning routines and strategies in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, and school in general. I am so happy with their progress.
Our First Unit of Study for Reading is called WE ARE READERS.
Session 1: Readers Read the World
Session 2: Readers Read to Learn about the World
Session 3: Readers Read Alone and with a Friend
Session 4: Readers Read a book Cover to Cover
Session 5: Readers Reread
Last week, we got through all five sessions to build routine and this week we will be revisiting them to make sure our routines and procedures are solid. This will become the time where I conference with groups and students, as well as working with my guided reading groups. They need to have a solid understanding of what is expected. I AM SO PROUD OF THEM! Today we read privately for 7 minutes with a mini-lesson in the middle. SEVEN MINUTES!!! Our goal for day one was three minutes and today our goal was five but they were so engaged I pushed it a little bit to seven. We fill in a reading goal chart so they visually see that they are reading more and more each day.
Each Monday, your child will bring home a FAMILY TIMES and a small reader which will be the book they should read tonight for homework. Please make sure they are pointing while they are reading. It will secure the skill of one to one matching that they will need later as books get more difficult. Please use the Family Times as a guide to help establish routines for home. Nothing needs to be returned to school for these activities. These little paper books build upon each other and use our Kindergarten sight words. Our sight words this week are: I, am.
Math Lessons
*Counting, Writing, and Recognizing numbers in different arrangements (1-5)
*Counting to 10
*Learning how to use our new math workbooks
Math Stations
*Pattern Block Fill in
*Color by Number Fish and/or Bear
*Making Groups and Writing Numbers 1-4
*Puzzles
*Working with me in small groups counting objects through 10 and making groups of objects through 10
Science and Social Studies
*We are continuing to learn about each other and safety rules at BPE
*Working on our Classroom contract

It will secure the skill of one to one matching that they will need later as books get more difficult. Please use the Family Times as a guide to help establish routines for home. Nothing needs to be returned to school for these activities. These little paper books build upon each other and use our Kindergarten sight words. Our sight words this week are: I, am.

I was picked to be a pilot classroom for APPLE TV and GOOGLE CLASSROOM. It is not completely set up; technical difficulties but something amazing happened today. Ask your child about me LOCKING out their iPads today. Insert evil laugh here! :) Apple Classroom allows me to be in charge of their iPads. I can send them to a certain app or website and "lock" them into that site. I also have the power (evil laugh; throws head back) to completely lock their ipads. I didn't tell them about that feature and today I used it. All of their faces looked up at me, eyes wide and yelled, "HEEEYYYYYY."......We all had a good laugh; I think me the most. :) I cannot wait to explore more features of Google Classroom.

-Your child will be bringing home their first (if you don’t count week before last) leveled reading assignment this week. We are ready to take off! Do not spend more than 10 minutes on the reading assignment (unless of course your child wants to and you have the time). These books are to help build reading strategies and fluency. It is OKAY if your child memorizes the book; however, please have him/her point to the words as he/she is reading. I try to read with every group every day, but in the beginning this may not be the case. Please make sure your child puts the book back into the Daily Folder each night after reading so we will have them here for reading groups. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Have fun and happy reading!!

September 19-23
Wow! Where does the time go? We are beginning our 5th week of school and are already more than halfway through the first quarter! The kids are doing well and are adjusting nicely to our kindergarten routines! I have almost completed individual letter naming/letter sound assessments and am hoping to also complete individual reading assessments by the end of next week. Once assessments are complete I will begin meeting with small groups and sending home leveled readers – in the meantime, we will continue to rotate the readers that have been coming home the last few weeks. Thank you so much for remembering to send them back each day!
Headphones:
Tomorrow we are getting started with our ipads! Woohoo! If you haven't already done so, please send a set of headphones (we have found headphones are much more comfortable for little ears than earbuds) for your child to keep at school for use with the ipads. They will be returned at the end of the year. Thanks!
Treasure Box:
Thank you to those of you that have sent in treasures for our treasure box. Please continue to think of us if you are cleaning out toy boxes or browsing the Dollar Spot at Target - we will gladly accept any donations! Plastic rings, bracelets, stickers, cars, key chains and tiny animals are always big hits! Thank you so much!

TOMORROW IS PICTURE DAY:
Please send your picture envelope tomorrow if you are purchasing pictures. If you ordered online, I don't think you need to return the envelope. There might be an option to print your receipt. Our pictures at 8:00 so if everyone could be on time, that would be amazing. If "life" happens and you are tardy, there are opportunities throughout the day for your child to get their picture taken. Every child gets their picture taken even if you choose NOT to purchase any pictures. We use them in our computer system at school. I can't wait to see everyone's cute outfits and smiles. Tomorrow is PE day as well. If your child is going to be fancy, they can always change into more appropriate school clothes if needed. Please wear sneakers or put them in their backpack for PE and recess. Thanks so much!
After School Community Ed programs (Golf, Chess, etc) began last week. If your child is attending a class after school, please send a yellow note on EACH day that the class meets. The yellow note will serve as their dismissal ticket on that day and assures me that they are in the correct place and that the class is still in session. Let me know if you need any yellow tickets and I can slip some in your child’s folder. Thanks!
Headphones:
We are getting closer to getting started with our ipads. Each student will need a set of headphones to use with his/her ipad. Please send a set of headphones (we have found headphones are much more comfortable for little ears than earbuds) for your child to keep at school. They will be returned at the end of the year. Thanks!
Mini Flashlight or Head Lamp:
We will be having "Flashlight Fridays" where we will be turning out the lights and reading or working. Please send a mini flashlight or Head Lamp to school with your child. It will be returned at the end of the year. Thanks!

Thursday, September 15 – Individual Picture Day, envelopes and info were sent home in your child’s folder last week.
Weekly Reading Assignments – Each Monday (Tuesday this week) your child will bring home a small decodable reader (this week is Am I?) as well as the Family Times pamphlet, which includes suggested activities for each day of the week. Please have your child practice reading the booklet every day to build fluency and sight word recognition. The Family Times activities are optional, but definitely help reinforce the concepts we are working on in class. Beginning next week, your child will be taking home a book to read at home. The book may be too easy, too hard, or just right. I have not done any formal assessments at this time, this is more about developing responsibility and just having fun reading a book. I would love to ask that you read it at least three times to build fluency. It does not need to be all at once, unless they have the stamina to do so. Thanks for your support at home. I couldn't do it without you!

August 29 - September 2
We have been hard working students here in Room 106. We are working on getting to know each other, learning classroom routines, understanding classroom and school rules and working as a team. I often refer to the class as a "team", or a "family"....and we are! Your child spend most of their waking hours with us at school, so we are taking our time to be kind and respectful towards others. The beginning of the year is less academics and more routines but without those routines and expectations in place it will be difficult for me to teach the academics.
READING STREET AND MATH HOMEWORK:
Each Monday your child will bring home a small decodable reader (this week is I Am) as well as the Family Times pamphlet, which includes suggested activities for each day of the week. We read the book together in class every Monday, so your child is familiar with it. Reading the booklet every day helps build fluency and sight word recognition. The Family Times activities are always optional, but definitely help reinforce the concepts we are working on in class.
Beginning next week, your child will also bring home a “real” book. You will notice that the book your child brings home might be too easy, too hard or it might be just right. I have not done any formal evaluation or assessment yet…we are just getting into a routine of taking books home, practicing reading to someone and bringing them back the next day. If it is too hard, just read it to them or with them – NO STRESS!! Enjoy!
Most math lessons at school are hands on using manipulatives, so you will not see that part of the lesson. For example, today we used real shapes to determine "same and different" and the extension activity was the worksheets you will find in your child's folder. These are optional to complete but should only take a few minutes if you choose to do so. You do not send these papers back to school with your child. Give them a big star or smiley face on top and praise their efforts. You could extend the activities at home as well. They could become your "laundry sorter". Are these socks the same or different! ;)
Important Reminders:
Thursday, September 8th - Learning Station Volunteer Orientation, 12 pm in Room 106
Note: If you have already attended a Parent Volunteer Meeting in the past, no need to come again, you will just need to sign a new confidentiality form. Let me know if you would like for me to send the information home with your child. Of course anyone who would like a ‘refresher’ is welcome to join us! Thanks!

Week of August 22nd-26th
We are up and running in Room 106! We are learning routines, making new friends, and I am sure tired by the end of the day; I know I am! Our days have been lively and energetic and each day is getting better.
We have rotated through math stations this week and even began a simplified version of learning stations. Each day is a new adventure and they are rising to the challenge. We are learning classroom and school rules. We are working on sharing, taking turns and being kind to our friends. We will become a close knit family very soon and BPE will be their home away from home. We will be working on a Classroom Social Contract next week and you will most likely hear your children talk about "filling a bucket". HAVE YOU FILLED A BUCKET TODAY is an amazing book that we will read and revisit throughout the year. Here is a link if you would like to read more about it. It has been a great week and I look forward to next week already!! Roxie will be able to come to school very soon. I can feel it! ;)
